What to Write in a Personalised Video Request: Examples and Template

A strong video request gives the performers enough detail to sound personal without turning the message into a script that is hard to deliver. Use the template below, then adapt it to the occasion.

The six details to include

1. Name: write it exactly as it should be spoken.
2. Pronunciation: add a simple phonetic note, such as “Siobhan (shi-VAWN)”.
3. Occasion: birthday, anniversary, congratulations, thank-you, roast or another event.
4. Relationship: explain who the message is from.
5. Specific detail: add one or two hobbies, habits or memories.
6. Closing line: give the exact words you want at the end.

Copy-and-fill template

Please say: “Happy [occasion], [name].” Pronunciation: [guide]. The message is from [sender]. Please mention [detail one] and [detail two]. Tone: [warm/playful/high-energy/deadpan/professional]. Please finish with: “[exact closing line].” Please avoid: [anything off-limits].

Birthday example

“Happy 30th, Aisha (EE-sha). This is from Dan, Priya and the Tuesday running group. Please mention that she never misses a hill session and always brings the post-run snacks. Keep it playful. Finish with: London is ready for the birthday lap.”

Anniversary example

“Happy 25th anniversary, Anna and David. Anna is pronounced AN-ah. This is from Sophie and Ben. Please mention their 2001 wedding, the campervan and the family Sunday dinners. Keep it warm. Finish with: here’s to the next adventure.”

Roast example

State what is safe to joke about and what is off-limits. A clear boundary gives the crew room to perform without making the recipient uncomfortable.

• Check spelling and pronunciation.
• Remove private information that does not need to appear in the video.
• Confirm you have permission to share any photo you upload.
• Keep children's information to the minimum needed for the greeting.
